WRAC Statue Appeal

Back in September 2018, we asked members via Lioness and on social media if they liked the idea of having a WRAC statue placed in our plot at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Support for the suggestion was overwhelming and therefore, it was decided to go ahead.

Members had very precise ideas as to what the statue should look like and what she should be wearing. The sculptor who made the ATS statue was approached and agreed to take on the commission. He translated our vision into a couple of sketches, one of which you can see on this page. Andy DeComyn has several pieces at the NMA, including the ‘Shot at Dawn’ memorial. The NMA have given provisional approval and we are in the final stages of the process.

We hope to hold our 2020 AGM at the NMA, where we will unveil and dedicate the WRAC statue. It will be a joyous affair and is likely to involve tea and cake to celebrate.

The cost will be £20,000 to complete and install our WRAC statue, carve WAAC and QMAAC badges on the side of the ATS lady and also include maintenance for the next 10 years.

We now need to raise the money and that’s where you come in.

The main thrust of our fundraising will be the annual 10k run/walk/crawl which is headed up by Wendy Hooton. She has persuaded more than 100 members to take part in the York 10k. (The oldest participant in our team will be 79.) We will be joined by many supporters on the day and their part in the proceedings is crucial to get our team over the finishing line.
